Tyla Laura Seethal is a singer and songwriter known mononymously as Tyla. With her unique take on the South African musical genre of amapiano, the soloist is fronting a new wave of female stars raising African pop’s global profile. In 2024, Tyla made her Met Gala debut in a Balmain gown, which was moulded to her body with sand. The moment went viral for her dramatic entrance and the outfit’s unusual interpretation of the event theme. She then fronted a 2024 campaign for The Gap, following in the footsteps of musicians like Madonna, Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz who have also modelled for the brand.
With the help of stylist Katie Qian and creative director Thato Nzimande, Tyla has become known for her bold beauty looks and high-octane, quintessentially noughties wardrobe: a mix of high-end labels like Versace, Marc Jacobs and Mugler; emerging designers like Asai and DiPetsa; as well as South African brands Naoserati and Thebe Magugu. She has fronted covers for the likes of Dazed, Billboard magazine, Cosmopolitan, and The New York Times’ T Magazine.
Tyla burst onto the music scene with her 2023 breakout single ‘Water,’ which was crowned a top ten track in sixteen countries. The song, which preceded the release of her self-titled debut album, was the first by a South African artist to enter the Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. Alongside accolades like a Brit Award and a Soul Train Music Award, it won Tyla the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024, making her the youngest African artist to win a Grammy.
